Thirteen people die everyday on the roads of beautiful Italy. Approximately Four thousand five hundred  people every year. The US deaths in Iraq from 2003 were slightly less than five thousand (during seven years of war).

Considering that an US soldier is a volunteer, equipped with the best, in a war area. There are less chances for a soldier to be killed by a terrorist in Iraq or Afganistan than for an Italian Citizen going to work by car or coming home from a night out with his friends.

Italian laws on traffic accidents need a serious review, before it’s too late. And if five thousand deaths is not too late yet, well, we need to do some serious re-thinking of what our priorities are on the value of life.

Today I met the father of a five years old girl (Serena Del Fabbro) that was literally thrown up into the air to fall to her death by a driver who was driving his car at an aproximate speed of 130km. per hour in a downtown area next to a school. The driver didn’t even stopped after killing the little girl, but returned to the scene two minutes later to recuperate his licence tag that fell from his car after the terrible impact with the girl’s body.

Serena had a sister. She is seven. She was on her daddy’s right side when the accident occourred about a month ago. She saw her younger sister flying up in the air and fall down on the hard concrete. Agnese cannot sleep alone anymore, and she will have a very heavy load to carry for the rest of her life.

The driver was arrested and released a few days later. He was also permitted to go back to work. He is to be sentenced at the end of September, but he won’t probably spend another single day in jail. That is the Italian Law that needs to be changed immediately.

When I red about the accident I was personally touched and felt really sad for the small girl who lost her tiny life just because a driver was driving too fast. He wasn’t even drunk or under the influence of drugs, he was “just” speeding.

On the same day I founded a group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=112011118847994 . The purpouse of the group is to avoid that people who kill someone under the influence of alchool, drugs, or just because they drive wrecklessly, won’t be allowed to have their drivers licence back FOREVER.

it is not an easy task, I know, but based on my research, I found that there have been many, too many cases of people who killed someone, that killed again on the road and that is not acceptable anymore.

What is the difference between a terrorist that blows himself up killing innocent people, and someone who drives his car totally wasted by drugs, alchool or the combination of the two?

I believe there is NO difference and if we can try to put these people who have killed once on trial , compared to terrorists, we could have their drivers licences suspended forever.

All it takes is just a grain of common sense. But is there any, among our politicians who seem to have forgotten that the life of their citizens is the most important issue of all?

The road’s rules have been tightened up lately, but still, it has not been enough if they continue to set these silent killers free and we give them back their lives and their licences because they are absurdely considered more a “victim” than the person they swiped out of life.

The judges and magistrates defend their operate by telling that they can only apply “existing laws” but how would they feel if the person they let go free will kill again next year, and this time the victim will be one of their own son or daughter? The same way with the politicians. It must be an accident where someone really close to them dies, then, and only then they surely will realize that the time of proposing a new law is not only passed but needs to be  created really fast, faster than how fast a car can go, driven by a driver  who ended the life of a beautiful little girl that was crossing the road on a sunny day, with her father and sister, and will not be able to grow up because she is dead.(pio dal cin- copyright 2010-)
