Codognè I Presepi in mostra (video) La biblioteca comunale come fulcro culturale

Buon Natale.

A true dog story.The Girl and I

When I rented the small apartment on Fifthteen Avenue and Fletcher Street in Hollywood Florida I did not know that I would have met a great friend there.

I had just moved back from Los Angeles a few weeks before. I didn’t like L.A.Too big too strange, too many earthquakes. I thought I was better off with hurricanes, at least I knew when they were coming. I had driven a cab before in the  Hollywood-Ft.Lauderdale area so , as the new Winter season approached I moved back to Florida and went back to drive a taxi.

She was laying on the floor with a sad look in her eyes like only dogs can have; she didn’t look happy at all. Randy was Marylin’s ten years’ old son and they were living in the main house.

A door in the front yard and one in the back. From the back door there was the entrance to my apartment and “Andy” was always staying there, with that sad look in her eyes. I soon realized why. Randy got a new puppy, he must have been trhee or four months old. He was jumping up and down like puppies do all the time, licking faces and stumbling on water containers, barking for no reasons at ants or roaches or lizards.Andy was sad because all of Randy’s attention was now focused on that hyper dog that was responding to him as he excpected.

“You have got a new dog I see..”

“Yep.you like him?”

“I do!” I love dogs, but what about Andy over there” I said pointing at the black Labrador with the sad look”

“Oh ,she is old, and blind.that is why I got him”

I approached Andy and saw that white look that a dog and a human get on their pupil when they are blind. I massaged  her slowly in the neck .

“How long has she been like this?”

“Two years  now” ”

I noticed that when Randy spoke, the fourteen years old Labrador turned her head towards the voice as if she was asking for some of that love that she needed so badly and was only granted to the new entry.

“She still loves you Randy”

“Yes, I know, but she’s old and blind”

I would have loved to grab the scumbag by the balls and lift him up in the air. I did nothing of course but kept rubbbing Andy’s neck.

“Good girl,good girl”

“We are going to put her to sleep later on today”

I almost fell backwards

“What? Why?”

“We are going to New Jersey for a week and there is no way we’ll take two dogs up there, and..you know she’s blind” I looked at him with a mix of compassion and the urgent desire to kick him and teach him a lesson.

Then I realized that he would have never understood anyhow.

That was the way he was.

He was ten and considered the dog some kind of a toy.

The toy was broken. The toy was quickly replaced.

Nobody could have ever taught him what he needed to know about dogs. I considered myself lucky to have had so many dogs since I was a kid. I cannot remember a single year of my life when I lived without a dog. Big or small, full breed or mixed, male or female. When they died I cried for days and they taught me in my childhood that life is short, they taught me that it is good to cry to let it out, to feel better once the “horse of pain” stops running somehow you realize that life goes on and you will remember that friend you lost and place him in a very special room in your heart forever.

There was no way I’d let that dog being put to sleep.I went to the front door and rang the bell. Randy had left in the meantime with the puppy jumping up and down as they disappeared from the alley.

Marylin opened the door with the phone on her hand.

She was talking about the  old labrador, the toy that was broken. I told her

” I want to adopt the Girl”

“Andy you mean?” She said putting the phone down as the conversation ended.

“I guess you’re a bit too late, they are coming as we speak”

“No no. Marylin.Call them back. I will take care of that dog. no killing please”

“Are you sure? She is blind, fourteen years old, she doesn’t have much time left.”

” I know, I heard the story from that stupid son of yours” I wanted to say , but  I just settled for :”Please, let me take her in with me”

“Ok.Ill call them back. She’s all  yours”

“Thanks Marylin you have just made me happy” I went to the back door and there she was, standing on the entrance, waiting for Randy to come back. I sat by her and started rubbing her back “Good girl, good girl” We soon started our relationship.

During the following days, weeks months Girl and I became good friends. She learned how to go about the apt without bumping her head everywhere.

Iwould  share my best food with her. I treated her like a queen. The time came where I had to go back to Italy, and  I could not leave her behind. I organized myself into taking her with me on the plane. It wasn’t easy but she eventually made it through the ordeal of an eight hours flight. It took her about a week to recuperate her strenght when I got home to Italy. Two years later, after I adopted her, on a rainy night, the Girl wandered outside the house.

I though she went out for a nature call so I did not mind following her outside. She did that many times.

That night  it was raining hard and  and she must have lost her bearings. She crossed the street. An hour later I went to check if she was ok. Found her on the other side of the highway. She was dead. I never cried so much for a dog in my life like I did for Girl. It took me a long time to get over it. Only today, sixteen years later I decided to share her and my story, after Im got my daughter a female labrador,Lola, just to show her how great these dogs can be.I consider dogs to be Angels, sent from above o teach us the laws of living wisely, as we lost them a long time ago and  they still have in their DNA

Pope Francis will clean the Vatican like San Francesco

(by pio dal cin)March 15th 2013 00:18 a.m (Rome Time GMT+1) As Pope Francesco begins His Papacy with a visit to the Church of  Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome to pay respect to Mary Mother of Jesus. known to the people of Rome as

Maria Salus Populi Romani.

Pope Francesco boarded a simple car instead of the Official Vatican Car and with a simple bouquet of flowers in His hand went to the Church to pray silently for about ten minutes in front of the Altar.

His simple ways highlited here by The New York Times appeared immediate as He choose his papal name as Francesco as the Greatest Saint in the History of the Church.

Even the +Dalai Lama  made a +Google+  post to acknowledge that He knows and Loves Saint Francis of Assisi for His discipline, simple ways, and Love for All Creatures.

Being the first Pope ever to choose  such a Great Name puts Him on a very important spot. Not easy to manage.

The need for a simple Man that can embrace the Original Message of Jesus through the New Testament withnessed in person by Saint Francis of Assisi was strongly needed in a corrupted and evil world that hasn’t spared even the Vatican in the past decade.

1)Vatican Leaks
2)Pedophile Scandals in the Catholic Church
3)The IOR Vatican Bank Scandals
4)Vatican richness

He has a though job ahead of Him, but His simple ways (He greeted the crowd in St.Peter with a “Fratelli e Sorelle Buonasera”) have already conquered the world. He asked the people who gathered in the Square to Bless Him, before He would Bless them.
How many Wolves will this Pope with Italian Origins will have to encounter inside the Vatican, like

Saint Francis with the Gubbio’s Wolf (see video here)

New Pope O’Malley Cardinal with “what it takes” (a plea to the Holy Spirit)

(by pio dal cin) Saturday March 9th 2013 7:00 Rome Time.
With the Conclave Extra Hommnes  from the Latin word “cum clavem” (with key) that comes from what happened in 1270 when the people of Viterbo locked the cardinals in the City’s Palace until they reached the election of Gregory X

The process to elect the new Head of the Catholic Church will begin on Tuesday March 12th.
As I stated in a previous post( A fool’s prediction),  trying to make a prediction is like to be able to guess the lottery numbers. Anyone can be right or wrong.

I was brought up a Christian Catholic in a very strict way. My name comes from Padre Pio da Petrelcina whom my dad met many times when he was a “small friar” battered by the Church and confined without the permission to Celebrate the Mass as he was becoming popular among the crowds for His “miracles”.

(Mons. Albino Luciani-Pope John Paul the I with my father) I met two Popes personally in my life: Pope John Paul

the I and Pope John Paul the II. (foto copyright pio dal cin 2013)

During my travelling around the World, as a photojournalist I came in touch and I studied
Islam, Ebraism, Buddhism and the Religion of the Native Americans, out of my curiosity of understanding where, if there is one, lies the Truth.

I must admit that I wasn’t thrilled about Pope Benedict VXI; not much for His great personality and profound culture, but for the fact that he “sported” those huge golden crosses on His neck and the “fisherman ring” was big enough to buy a couple of apartments.

I kept repeating to myself that “This cannot be Sacred..” Isn’t the Church supposed to support the poverty as one of the three wows?”

Native Americans have a saying “If it is Sacred it must be Free..” I like this. But how many controversial, not free items are there in the Catholic Church today? Why is the Legacy of Saint Peter obliterated by scandals of the Vatican’s funds of million of Euros?

I learned that the IOR (the Vatican Bank)is the most powerful bank in the whole world.

This should change, in my humble opininion. Saint Francis of Assisi was called by Jesus
to “Repair the Church”“Vai Francesco, ripara la mia Chiesa” and was cited here by Benedict VXI.

Times are very hard and the sex scandals, Vatican Leaks and not so transparent transactions of the Church are “rocking the Boat” like never before.

Given my statement that “You have to be a Fool to make a prediction of choosing a Pope”, I will have another approach and “write a letter of plead to the Holy Spirit“, asking to pick the only one I saw that fits the description of Saint Francis of Assisi: Cardinal Sean O’Malley (read His blog)

LETTER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT: I will start with this Song to the Holy Spirit, that is sung by the Cardinals upon entering the Conclave, to ask for Divine Inspiration.

Dear Holy Spirit,

I am just a grain of sand in the Universe. I understand nothing about the Laws and the Forces that balance the Great Space.

Many Humans call upon Your Force and Greatness. Some call You Great Spirit, other call You Holy Spirit, other do not even believe in You.

During these days the Catholic Church is called to elect the Captain of the Ship.

It is been very hard for me in these past years to believe that Your Holy Presence is among those walls, given all the scandals that we heard about.

It is very hard to boftenelieve that the Spirit of Jesus and of Saint Peter, and Saint Francis of Assisi is behind the gold and richness ofnen shown by those who are called to be Your servants, while there are million of people who suffer in the World.

So here is my humble plea: If You are really among those walls, Shed  a Great LIght upon those who are called to elect the new Pope so that His ways will be as Jesus requested of
simplicity and trasparency. a real Sheperd that can show the World that Jesus is still among us human beings in the way HE  taught us.

My pick is Sean O’ Malley

(I know that You don’t need suggestions but at least I casted my vote)

The new Pope? Who will He be? A fool’s prediction(mine)

(by pio dal cin) March 6th 2013 11:00 pm (GMT+1)
As I red the “Washington Post” article about the”AmericanCardinals” involved in the election of the new Pope, my attention was attracted by these few lines:
Di Nardo and O’Malley drew laughs when one reporter asked O’Malley, a member of the Capuchin order, if he would continue to wear his trademark brown robes if elected pope.

“I’ve worn this uniform for over 40 years and I presume I will wear it until I die,” he said. “I don’t expect to be elected pope, so I don’t expect to have to change.”
t
This was the second time I heard this today: first time on the Italian National Radio. The words “Capucine” attracted my attention, as I did not know that there was an American Cardinal who wears the “saio” (the Capucine uniform) for forty years.

Whomever tries to make a prediction about who is going to be the next Pope is a fool, as there are two ways of looking at this event that is monopolizing the attention of over Five thousand accredited journalists from all over the world:

A): The Vatican is a Earthly Power made by people like you and I, owners of the most powerful bank in the world (the IOR). As any other power on this earth the election will deliver the new Pontiff as the Head of a State (The Vatican)and any name among the 115 cardinals could be the one to take St.Peter’s Legacy.

B): As seen from a Christian Catholic point of view the “Conclave” is fueled by the Holy Spirit, therefore the Chosen will be absolutely without any possibility of mistake the “Right One”.

After this any prediction is impossible. There are no ways. Probably guessing the Lotto numbers will be a lot easier.

A FOOL PREDICTION

My name is Pio. My father Narciso named me after a Capucine Saint he had the priviledge of knowing when He was an unknown Capucine Friar healing people and making “miracles.
The Church confined him without the permission to celebrate the Holy Mass, for ten long years, on the ground that He, Himself was considered “strange”. He is now a Saint; Saint Pio or better known as “Padre Pio da Petrelcina”.

I grew up in a very Christian Catholic environment and my life was filled with its simbols from my childhood. I had the opportunity of meeting two Popes in my life: the first one was John Paul the First, Albino Luciani. More than once, as He was the Bishop of Vittorio Veneto, where I grew up, and then, during a private visit of my family to the Partiarcat of Venice, where He spent his last years before becoming Pope John Paul I.

The second Pope I met was Pope John Paul II for three times as I followed him as a young photojournalist during His vacation on the Dolomites‘ town of Lorenzago.
Does this make me an expert on Popes?
Absolutely not, just another fool trying to make a prediction.

HARD TIMES FOR THE CHURCH

Times are hard for the Catholic Church, battling amid sex scandals and the “Vatican Leaks” files.
The need is for a strong Pope, one Captain that can take the helm of the Ship and go trough one of  Church’s worst hurricanes in history.

It is time for a Pope with the “saio” who can bring the Church back to the times of Saint Francis of Assisi, the poor friar who made a great revolution in the Church with His humble, poor ways.
Without a Pope that can rid the Vatican from all the “evils” represented by richness, golden crosses, money trades that cannot be tracked for million of Euros and all the sex scandals that have come up in the last few years, more than a Ship, it will look like the Titanic, headed for a Iceberg.

As a Fool prediction I will pick Cardinal O’Malley, hoping that if He gets elected He will keep wearing the “saio” for the next forty years, but this time as a Pope, making the “B” option above more credible.

G+ Google plus Hangouts have improved accessibility for the hearing impaired

(by pio dal cin) +Google+  has announced today that accessibility has been improved for the hearing impaired on Hangouts. Read the post below by +Anna Cavender  that I saw trough +Loren Groves (thanks dude for sharing +Sharing is Caring on G+ )

via +Loren Groves  Improving accessibility on Hangouts ht +Anna Cavender
Anna Cavender originally shared this post:
Improving accessibility in Hangouts

Accessibility is something we care a lot about on the Hangouts team. The Hangout Captions app, for example, enables live transcription services for the deaf and hard of hearing (http://goo.gl/4RujF). And “Take the Floor” makes it easier for sign language speakers to do a Hangout together (http://goo.gl/chyKS). Today we’re rolling out two accessibility improvements in Hangouts – a Sign Language Interpreter app, and a fuller set of keyboard shortcuts.

1) Using the Sign Language Interpreter app, deaf or hard of hearing users who prefer sign language can invite interpreters to speak and sign for them during a Hangout. They’ll always see their interpreter at the top right of the window, and they’ll become the focus of the Hangout whenever their interpreter speaks for them. You can install the app using this link: https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_?gid=532733437531.

2) Keyboard shortcuts are also available in Hangouts — great for people who can’t or don’t want to use a mouse during the video chat. For example: muting your microphone is now as simple as Ctrl+D (PC) or Command+D (Mac), and you can start chatting with Ctrl+B (PC) or Command+B (Mac). To view the full list of keyboard shortcuts just type ‘?’ while in a Hangout, or visit this page:support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?answer=2752487.

Both features are rolling out gradually, so let us know what you think once you’ve taken them for a spin!

To all corrupted politicians in Italy. On your last day, you’ll regret your behaviour

Italian Stereotype - 1.Liar
Italian Stereotype – 1.Liar (Photo credit: Raffaello Robbiani)

(by pio dal cin) To all the corrupted politicians out there. Listen to the voices of the People of Italy crying for some relief. Before you are a politician you are (or at least should be) a MAN.

Next time you hoover over a City with your helicopter on the way to make a multimillion euro deal, think of the person in despair because he just lost his job, or because the enterprise he started with great sacrifices is about to collapse, maybe for a bill, or a law that you voted.

Think of a mother trying to feed the children with less than a thousand euros a month, while you are getting a message on your Iphone telling you that your 90thousand euro pension has been deposited in your bank account.

Think of a young couple who will not be able to start a family because the Bank just denied them a mortgage as they only have one paycheck a month and it won’t be enough.

Think of all the money you stole, and you are stealing from the poor people. One day you are going to die too. You will die rich and perhaps you’ll regret on your death bed not having being able to be honest and it will be the moment you’ll meet your Creator, it will be the saddest moment of your life.

Honesty
To achieve honesty within yourself,
To recognize who and what you are ,
Do this and you can be honest with all others

Humility
Humble yourself and recognize that
No matter how much you think you know,
You know very little of all the universe.

Truth
To learn truth,
To live with truth, and
To walk with truth,
To speak truth

Wisdom
To have wisdom is to know the difference between good and bad, and
To know the result of your actions

Love
Unconditional love to know that when people are weak
They need your love the most,
That your love is given freely, and
You cannot put conditions on it
Or your love is not true

Respect
Respect others, their beliefs, and
Respect yourself.
If you cannot show respect,
You cannot expect respect to be given

Bravery
To be brave is to do something right,
Even if you know it’s going to hurt you.

Elezioni 2013 Ecco i primi risultati- Italian Elections 2013 here the first results

expected grilo (by pio dal cin)

These should be the first results from the Elections in Italy as Grillo is expected to make a “killing” with his policies of “sending the old Nomenclatura away from the Parliament” Every Party is fearing his success as results are pouring in after the polls closed at 3:00 pm local time (GMT+1)

Grillo e l’Italia.

Avrebbe fatto meglio a stare nelle retrovie in silenzio o quasi come stanno facendo:

GRILLO.

(pio dal cin. all right reserved °copyright 2013)

Attack By Chondrite: Scientists ID Russian Meteor

Attack By Chondrite: Scientists ID Russian Meteor

February 22, 2o13

Researchers who studied pieces of the meteor collected near Lake Cherbarkul say it was a common chondrite meteor. The largest of the 53 fragments was one centimeter in diameter. Photo provided by the Urals Federal University Press Service.

The meteor that caused at least 1,000 injuries in Russia after a startling and powerful daytime explosion one week ago has been identified as a chondrite. Russian scientists who analyzed fragments of the meteor, whose large size and well-documented impact made it a rarity, say that its composition makes it the most common type of meteor we encounter here on Earth.

“The fragments contain a standard number of minerals, including olivine, pyroxene, troilite and kamacite,” scientist Viktor Grokhovsky of the Urals Federal University, told the Voice of Russia. “These minerals that can be discovered only in outer space confirm the fragments’ extraterrestrial nature.”

That means that before it shattered windows in the city of Chelyabinsk and turned people around the world into gawkers fascinated by a calamity — and by the amazing video footage of it — the meteor spent billions of years traveling through space.

When it detonated over Russia, the explosion was powerful enough to be “detected by 17 nuclear monitoring stations around the globe,” as The Christian Science Monitor reports.

The meteor, which may have weighed as much as 10,000 tons and measured about 55 feet across, was traveling at an estimated 11 miles per second when it reached Earth, according to a report at io9.

“Chondrites are some of the most primitive rocks in the solar system,” says Britain’s Natural History Museum. “These 4.5-billion-year-old meteorites have not changed much from the asteroid they came from.”

The museum says the meteor’s name — pronounced with a hard “K” sound — comes from the Greek word for grains of sand.

But in the region where the meteor fell, the chondrite goes by another title: a chance to cash in. As NPR’s David Greene tells Linda Wertheimer on Morning Edition, people have been scrambling to collect pieces of the famous meteor.

“A 16-year-old pulled one out of his pocket and said, ‘Here’s a piece of the meteor, right here,” David says. “And this black market is developing. People have been coming to these villages and offering $100, $200 for little handfuls of space debris. The government’s worried that people are going to be trying to sell it fraudulently. So, this whole new economic reality is developing around this stuff.”

From the Archives: George Washington Writes in the Margins

Last month, President Obama began his second Inaugural Address by saying, “Each time we gather to inaugurate a President we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution.” President Obama’s words resonate as the anniversary of George Washington’s birthday approaches on February 22, popularly known as Presidents’ Day.

Over two centuries ago, on April 30, 1789, George Washington delivered his first Inaugural Address knowing that he had little to guide him in the job that lay ahead but the principles stated in the Constitution. The Articles of the Constitution had been debated, discussed, and agreed upon just two summers earlier by the delegates of the Constitution Convention, and were still untested. Nevertheless, Washington was a strong supporter of the Constitution and would look to it for guidance in his unprecedented role as President.

During Washington’s first year in office, Congress ordered 600 copies of the Acts of Congress to be printed and distributed to federal and state government officials. The book compiled the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and other legislation passed by the first session of Congress.

George Washington’s personal copy of the Acts of Congress contains his own handwritten notes in the margins. The notes provide insight into his crucial role in the implementation and interpretation of the Constitution and the establishment of the new American government.

Washington rarely wrote on the pages of his books, and the presence of his distinct handwriting makes the historic volume even more remarkable. Customarily, Washington preferred to take notes on a separate sheet of paper, which he would insert into a book. But in his copy of the Acts of Congress, he not only wrote directly in the margins but also drew brackets next to the passages of particular interest to him.

Only three copies of this book are known to have survived: Washington’s copy and the copies belonging to Thomas Jefferson and John Jay. After his two terms in office, Washington brought the book home to Mount Vernon. It stayed in the Washington family until 1876 and then passed through a series of collectors.

Last year, the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association secured the book at an auction, bringing it back to George Washington’s home. It is now on display at Mount Vernon in Virginia through Presidents’ Day.  Beginning in March, Washington’s Acts of Congress will travel the country and visit the 13 Presidential Libraries of the National Archives through a partnership with Mount Vernon.

In George Washington’s first Inaugural Address he referred to the new government as an “experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people.” Fifty-six Presidential inaugurations later, President Barack Obama spoke of the Constitution as an enduring framework for our government. The opportunity to see Washington’s Acts of Congress, complete with his carefully penciled notes, provides a rare glimpse into history that is as relevant today as it was 224 years ago.

The nationwide tour of the Acts of Congress is also an opportunity to reflect on the presidency and to wonder what it would feel like to take on the role of Commander in Chief. We’ve put together a gallery of inaugural moments that feature holdings from the 13 Presidential Libraries.

And while there are no photos of America’s first Presidential inauguration, we’ve included pages from George Washington’s first Inaugural Address from the holdings of the National Archives, as well as Washington’s historic copy of the Acts of Congress, courtesy of the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.

Happy Presidents’ Day!

The New York Times is selling the Boston Globe

The New York Times Company announced Wednesday that it is selling the Boston Globe.

Bloomberg was the first to report the news that the company is seeking to unload its biggest asset besides the New York Times itself. The Times issued a press release shortly after, saying that it has partnered with Evercore Partners to find a suitable buyer for the Globe and the other properties in its New England Media Group.

“Given the differences between these businesses and The New York Times, we believe that a sale is in the best long-term interests of these properties and the employees who work for them as well as in the best interests of our shareholders,” Times CEO Mark Thompson said in a statement.

The Times bought the Globe for $1.1 billion in 1993 — a sign of just how different the media landscape was two decades ago. The entire company now has $955 million in cash on hand. It will certainly not be able to attract that kind of price for the paper today; a Wall Street Journal piece in early 2012 speculated that the Globe could be had for about $200 million.

The company has spent the last year or so shedding many of its other business. It sold its regional papers in late 2011, and the About.com site in 2012. In addition, it has recently enacted layoffs at the Times.

The Times had previously flirted with selling the Globe in 2009, but ultimately decided against it. The Globe, the Times said, was on track to lose $85 million that year.

G+ Bradley Horowitz Describes his Tesla Model S driving experience

A Most Un-Peculiar Road Trip

A few weeks ago, we decided that we’d take advantage of the long weekend to drive down from the Bay Area to Los Angeles to see friends and family. The notion of driving down (v. flying) was made infinitely more appealing by the thought of taking our Tesla Model S.

In the intervening time, the +The New York Times +Elon Musk kerfuffle unfolded. I must say, it gave me a moment of pause about whether taking the Tesla was actually a good idea.

But I’ve already got more than 3000 miles on the car, and have learned to trust it.  So off we went.  And I started out by resetting the trip odometer, staying acutely aware of my energy consumption, etc.  But as the trip progressed (with another adult and two kids), we settled into the usual road trip rhythm of songs, games, and “Are we there yet?  How much longer?!”  It became clear that the fact that this was an electric car was a non-issue.  And so I stopped any notions of meticulous logging and just had fun and stayed present.  So this post is not in anyway intended as a rebuttal, filled with facts, figures, points and counterpoints.  Just one happy Model S owner’s experience, on one particularly well-supported route.

We trip was ordinary in the best possible sense. We had the air-conditioner going when it was hot (toward LA), the heater on when it was cold (back here), and we drove like we like to drive.  The car handled the steep grades on the path like a champ.  In fact the only thing missing was the roar of an engine struggling to make it up the hill.  😉

Per the attached map below, we stopped twice, breaking the trip into thirds.  This gave us an opportunity to eat, switch drivers, refresh… and of course recharge. In a gas-powered car, at least one of these stops would have been “optional” for me… maybe we’d have broken the trip into halves instead of thirds.  But we’d have still stopped to eat, and additionally I’d have definitely needed at least one bio-break and stand-and-stretch.  So in reality, there was a bit of a compromise.  For our second stop, what might have been a 15 minute pit-stop ended up being longer (by about 40 minutes.)  We put the time to good use, and it didn’t feel burdensome.

I heard a couple of NPR Marketplace correspondents last week describe this tradeoff well.  The first said (I paraphrase), “It’s not always appropriate to judge a new, disruptive technology against an incumbent across every dimension.  For instance, landlines almost never ‘drop calls.’  Cell phones do… a lot.  By that measure alone, you’d think that cell phones would fail.  But the added convenience of portability has trumped every other disadvantage.”  Another Marketplace reporter said (again paraphrasing), “I’m sure when gas-powered cars were first introduced some folks were dubious… since most of the oat-feeding stations in our national transportation network did not yet support gasoline pumps.  But that of course changed.”  😉

Here are some other random observations:
– One thing missing from the Supercharger stations – squeegees to clean the windshield of bugs! (+Tesla Motors help us out here!)
– This was my first experience using a Supercharger, and it’s pretty stunning how quickly it pours range back into the car.
– Lots of tumbleweeds blowing across I5.  Really big ones that folks had to brake for.
– Cost of travel for four to LA and back: $0 (thanks +Tesla Motors!) versus approx. $1000 for the flights we wanted.

Details:

Here’s a map of our route: http://goo.gl/maps/wpKpE

Palo Alto -> Harris Ranch Supercharger: 158mi
Harris Ranch Supercharger -> Tejon Ranch: 116mi
Tejon Ranch -> Koreatown (LA): 80mi

Total Distance: 354mi

Note that I actually passed a Supercharger in Gilroy, simply because I didn’t need it.  That was fun.  ;-)Collapse this post

(by pio dal cin) February 15th 2013 10:23 pm. What a great experience today. I had the great privilege and honour to talk to Astronaut +Samantha Cristoforetti  from the +European Space Agency, ESA  in  Germany. We had a friendly talk about her upcoming experience on November 2014 when she will be a member of the crew going into the ISS (International Space Station) where she will spend six months orbiting around the Earth. I learned many things that I did not know about the ISS and life up there. One astonishing fact for me was the speed of travelling around the Earth as it takes about one and a half hour to complete an orbit. Curious to find out? Just watch this video and find out all the details of a great mission.

+Samantha Cristoforetti  will be the first Italian woman to have the honour of being sent into space to the ISS.

Thanks again for your time.  I had a great time

Medical examiners have positively identified the body of the renegade former Los Angeles police officer Christopher Dorner, the man authorities say killed four people and wounded three others in a vendetta against his old comrades.
That announcement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department came two days after a shootout, standoff and fire at a cabin in the mountains east of Los Angeles. Dorner’s remains were identified through dental recordsduring an autopsy, the department said.
The charred remains of a man believed to be Dorner were found in the burned-out cabin late Tuesday. The cause of death was not released with the identification
